The name means ‘mystery’ in Japanese and comes from the heroine of La Bataille a best selling novel by Claude Farrere, which tells the love story between the beautiful wife of a Japanese Admiral and a young British naval attaché. According to Elisabeth Barille, "while examining a sample of vanillin, Jacques Guerlain suddenly poured the entire contents into a nearby bottle of Jicky, just to see what would happen." (p 11). The result: Shalimar. Named after the Garden of Shalimar in Lahore, which had been built by the Emperor Shah Jehan (builder of the Taj Mahal) for his favourite wife, Mumtaz. In Sanskrit the name means ‘the abode of love’. Launched as an antidote against the Depression. Originally created by Jacques Guerlain in 1921, a classic soft amber (oriental) parfum with top notes of bergamot, lemon, mandarin and rosewood; heart notes of rose, jasmine, orris, patchouli and vetiver, on base notes of vanilla, benzoin, balsam of Peru and opoponax, classified F3f.
